Peninsular Malaysia – Hornbill Route

Penang – Kulim – Sedim – Royal Belum – Kenyir
(A route that takes us to various Lowland Rainforest birding sites with a focus on the potential 7 species of hornbill and 220 other species of birds)

 

Day 1: Royal Belum Park
Penang to Royal Belum Park Pick up from Penang International Airport. Travel to The Belum Rainforest Lodge, stopping along the way for opportunistic birding.

 

Check in. Evening drive to spot elephants. Overnight in Royal Belum Park.

 

Day 2: Royal Belum Park
Early breakfast at the resort. Birding along the way to Bukit Hijau. Lunch on the way and continue on birding to Sedim Nature Reserve where we will visit Malaysia’s longest canopy Walkway in Sedim. Surrounded by primary and secondary lowland rainforest and beautiful waterfalls, we will see out our first hornbills as well as target resident gems such as the White-crowned Forktail, Blue Whistling Thrush, Blue-crowned Hanging Parrot, Broadbills, Leafbird, Sunbirds, Spiderhunters, Bulbuls. Dinner and by early evening and drive to Royal Belum Park (1 hr 50 min drive north east). Overnight in Royal Belum Park. Night drive in search for elephants.

 

Day 3: Lower Royal Belum State Park – Merapoh
After early breakfast, we take our first boat ride on Temengor Lake to target all potential 10 species of Malaysia hornbills (except for Plain -pouched Hornbill which is only found during August-November). Easy views of Ospreys, Fish Eagles and Crested Serpent Eagles are common along with other wildlife such as Otters and monitor lizards. Check out of the hotel and we drive to Taman Negara Merapoh stopping along the way for lunch. Check into lodge. Birding around the lodge for more lowland species. Overnight Taman Negara Merapoh.

 

Day 4: Merapoh
After breakfast we bird all day along the many birding trails at this park breaking at midday for lunch and some rest before we continue more birding. Birds targeted include hornbills, Large Frogmouth, Woodpeckers, Green Broadbill and Babblers. Late evening we search for night birds. Overnight in Merapoh.

 

Day 5: Merapoh to Kenyir
Early breakfast and check out. We drive to Tasik Kenyir, stopping for opportunistic birding along the way. Check in and continue with late afternoon birding along the quite trails nearby.

 

Day 6: Kenyir Lake
All day birding at Kenyir. To spot Wrinkled hornbill and other hornbills.

 

Day 7 : Kenyir Lake – Departing Flight
Early birding for some target birds. Check out of resort and fly.
